A lua minguante no dia 06 de agosto de 2026
The waning moon on August 6, 2026Estou exausta de vigiar.
Eu me dou a permissão pra parar.
Volto pra cama.

I am exhausted from keeping watch.
I wake up to the rooster’s crow, I look at the diamond-shaped moon—checking if it’s hazy or misty, if the golden sunlight has hit it yet, if it’s waning or waxing... I look at the cactus, the coconut tree, the city, the freeway that looks like a Formula 1 track.
I give myself permission to stop.
I don’t need to know what phase the moon is in today. That’s what Americans do: they hole up inside and don’t see a soul. And that’s fine.
Today, I don’t need to be the moon’s watchman. The moon can look after itself.
If the urge to get up and check strikes in the middle of the night, I tell myself: "It’s not my shift."
I go back to bed.
A lua hoje dia 7 de agosto. 👇
The moon today, August 7th. 👇
👇
Soon she’ll be a mere sliver, and today she no longer walks upon the clouds. Yesterday she still had a rounded belly. Today, a slender crescent, alone in the smooth blue. No cloud to hide behind. She doesn't walk on clouds anymore because today there are no clouds. The sky has been swept clean. All that remains is that flat, smog-filled blue I photographed downtown earlier this morning. Soon she’ll vanish. She’ll turn into nothing—into a new moon. She’ll stay hidden, out of sight, for a couple of days. And then she’ll return on the other side, slender again but growing. Just like us. Some days we are that big moon from the video, surrounded by clouds. Some days we are just a tiny sliver, alone in the clear sky, yet still there.
E a lua ah a lua. Ontem as sete ela ainda estava lá, teimosa, clarinha no céu azul, meio losango torta.

Today’s haze isn’t like yesterday’s. Today, it looks more like pollution—much like the moon did at seven this morning. In that photo from the other day, it was a marine layer: white, low, and damp. The roof was soaked—remember? The air was humid and clean. The sky is blue overhead, but Downtown is shrouded in that yellowish, dingy, dull veil. The front roof is dry and matte. This isn’t mist; it’s actual smog—pollution trapped here in the LA valley when the wind dies down; it’s the summer doing this. I’m becoming a sky expert. More so than the average American. And the moon—ah, the moon. Yesterday at seven, it was still there, stubborn and bright against the blue sky, a slightly lopsided diamond shape. Today, it has moved on. It waned a bit more overnight and rose later, looking thinner. It’s no longer yesterday’s moon. Just like us. Today, we aren’t who we were yesterday—or who I was when I walked to the mailbox without my glasses and got a shock, realizing I was holding a letter from the court "inviting" me to serve on a jury. How did that happen? Today, I’m no longer the person sitting at the Elgin sewing machine mending a pair of pants, realizing it was just smoke. I don’t even need to keep looking anymore. I already know how to tell the difference between the mist that cleanses and the smoke that soils.
A minha lua de ontem
Nao era losango,
Era uma lua quase cheia
mas já mordida
já indo embora
lua minguante, cansada,
escondendo e aparecendo entre as nuvens
lua minguante, cansada,
escondendo e aparecendo entre as nuvens

My moon from yesterday
It wasn't a diamond shape,
It was a moon—almost full
but already bitten into,
already fading away—
a waning moon, weary,
hiding and appearing among the clouds
like me, hiding so as not to be seen.
E eu consegui pegar ela bem no meio do azul. Logo ela some, vira nada. Vira lua nova. Igual a gente.

In the previous video, you can see it playing tag with the cloud. One moment it vanishes, the next it returns, bigger. It looks like it’s breathing. And I managed to catch it right in the middle of the blue. Yesterday’s moon—set against that blue sky filled with cotton-like clouds—was the opposite of today’s haze downtown. Yesterday, there was humidity and winds from above. Today, the air is still, yellowish, and trapped. I’ve held onto the memory of yesterday’s moon because that moment has passed. Today, it woke up thinner and later; tomorrow, it will be thinner still. Today, it’s just a sliver, a thin fingernail, alone in the smooth blue. No clouds to hide behind. It no longer walks across the clouds. The sky has been swept clean. All that’s left is that flat, smog-filled blue I photographed earlier today. Soon it will vanish, turn into nothing. It becomes the new moon. It stays hidden, out of sight, for a couple of days. Then it returns on the other side—thin again, but growing. Just like us. Some days, we’re that big moon, surrounded by clouds. Other days, we’re just that tiny sliver—alone in a clear sky, yet still there.
Seria a leste do Éden?

The moon today, August 8, 2026
Eight seems to be a good number—whole, divisible, and capable of satisfying multiplication.
This is the third and final day I have been keeping watch over the silent witness in the sky. Both of us, tireless. Now it sets in the same direction where the sun rises. Could it be East of Eden? Footprints on the bridge reveal the tracks of a man wearing what appear to be boots—someone of large, heavy build. The cactus is grateful for the night mist.
A leste do Éden.

It’s the third and final day, and the vigil has ended. I’ve recorded everything a noir detective should:
The silent witness—that crescent moon I’ve been tracking for three mornings. It’s a sliver, just past seven a.m. It isn’t full or flashy; it’s the kind of witness that only speaks once everyone else has left. And now, it’s setting where the sun rises. That’s normal for this phase—the morning wane—but it feels wrong. It looks like it’s heading back to Eden. East of Eden. And I’m absolutely right. A plane cut across the sky between me and the moon. It’s a United flight, skirting Downtown and glancing over the Eastside on its way to LAX; they own that corridor. It’s likely an Airbus A320. My silent witness saw it too. Moon and United Airbus in the same frame. Only in Los Angeles.

Boots in the dew on my bridge. I saw lug soles, work-boot treads, a long stride. He walked through the night mist, left footprints glistening in the dew, and moved on before the sun dried everything up. It wasn’t a ghost. It was the caretaker, or the neighbor. He left the trail so I’d know I wasn’t the only one awake.
👇
In the end, looking at the clay pot—striped with sunlight through the grate—I understood that the cactus drinks the night mist. It doesn’t rain in L.A., but in the morning, the roof turns silvery with dew. The cactus drinks that. It doesn’t need rain, only our silent witness that brings the mist.
