We passed through many interesting places, such as Big Springs—though we didn't stop at others due to time constraints, as we were in a rush to reach Houston to celebrate James's birthday. Colorado City was the next stop after a lackluster breakfast in Big Springs. The day promised scorching heat—the kind that melts asphalt and fries your brain. We were eager and ready to press on; I was especially excited, as I wanted to see a state that lived up to everything I’d heard about it. My interest had been piqued when I first arrived here, and it grew even more after a certain purchase I made in Madison. The route from Los Angeles to Texas was the path to visit family, so we set off earlier than expected. The year 2026 began with a mix of tragedy and happiness.

Clássico parada de estrada do Oeste do Texas. Colorado City tem muito mais do que isso. Lake Colorado City Park - Lago de 1618 acres para pescar. Praia, caiaque para alugar, cabanas para dormir. As I looked at the photos and the route we were taking—that singular stretch of I-10—I became aware of what we were leaving behind: the mountains ahead and to our left that we wouldn't be entering, and the landscape to our right. You couldn't just drive straight past and say, "I'm not interested!" Everything was so breathtakingly vast, magnificent, historic, and fascinating; I felt my mind and heart absorbing it all, even while struggling to fully grasp the significance of it for the local people, the country, and the world. We stopped at Stripes for coffee. But Colorado City is also about water, museums, parks, and cowboy history. Gas at $4.19, a $3 taco, ice, and a RAM pickup with Texas license plate MPF-7078. A Sonic in the background. A classic West Texas roadside stop. Yet, Colorado City offers so much more. Lake Colorado City Park—a 1,618-acre lake for fishing. A beach, kayak rentals, and cabins for overnight stays. Over 300 bird species. A breath of fresh air in the dry West Texas climate. The Heart of West Texas Museum and the historic bridge across the Colorado River.

Lorraine esta em todas as direções com seus moinhos de vento. Terra dos gigantes brancos. O horizonte esta lotado de turbina eólica. O oeste do Texas virou capital do vento. Entre Abilene e Sweetwater tem um dos maiores parques eólicos do mundo. Rascoe Wind Farm. Buffalo Gap. Horse Hollow. Nomes que soam de filmes de cowboy, mas geram energia para o Texas inteiro. Vento forte. Terra plana. Pouca gente. Fazendeiro aluga pedaço de terra para moinho e ganha mais que com gado. Trocam gado por vento. Texas se reinventa. Cada pá tem 50 metros. Uma volta gera energia para casa por um dia. E voce esta dirigindo no meio disso tudo. Gigantes calmos, girando devagar. Lembra da lua de Celina? Metade luz, metade sombra? Lembra do avião cruzando o céu? Agora os moinhos. Eles nao fazem barulho. So giram. Pegam vento invisível e viram luz. Igual voce. Pegou a dor invisível de 12/05/2012 e esta virando milha, amigo, lua estrada. Ate vento vira força . A dor também vira. Respira fundo quando passar por eles. Esse vento esta levando recado seu para o céu também.

Lorraine is surrounded by wind turbines in every direction—a land of white giants. The horizon is packed with them. West Texas has become the wind capital; between Abilene and Sweetwater lies one of the world's largest wind farm complexes—Rascoe, Buffalo Gap, Horse Hollow. Names that sound like something out of a cowboy movie, yet they generate power for the entire state. Strong winds. Flat land. Sparse population. Farmers lease patches of land for turbines and earn more than they do from cattle; they’re trading livestock for wind. Texas is reinventing itself. Each blade is 50 meters long; a single rotation generates enough energy to power a home for a day. And there you are, driving right through the middle of it all. Silent giants, spinning slowly. Remember the moon over Celina? Half light, half shadow? Remember the plane crossing the sky? Now, the turbines. They make no noise. They just spin. They catch the invisible wind and turn it into light. Just like you. You took that invisible pain from May 12, 2012, and are turning it into miles—into the road, into the moon. Even the wind transforms into power. Pain does, too. Take a deep breath as you pass them. That wind is carrying a message from you up to the sky, as well.
